What are ABA / routing numbers?

Routing numbers are nine-digit codes used to identify a bank or other financial institution. When you’re setting up a wire transfer, they indicate where the funds are coming from. If you’re moving funds from your Santander bank account to an account at another bank, you’ll need to know your routing number.

Routing numbers are sometimes called ABA numbers, since it’s the American Bankers Association that created them. These numbers are important for transferring funds and doing online banking. If you need to set up direct deposits for your work, you’ll need your routing number and account number to proceed.

You can also fill out the “Contact Us” page on Santander Bank’s website.

Why does Santander Bank have multiple routing numbers?

Some banks can have multiple routing numbers, just like Santander Bank. This can happen when banks merge or acquire other banks, since the routing numbers do not change when banks change hands.

This creates a complication for account holders who do not know their routing number. Instead of looking up a single routing number for your bank, you need some account details to determine the routing number associated with your account.

If you do a wire transfer via a local branch or by phone, you’ll get charged $27 for a domestic transfer, $40 for an international transfer in USD, and $31 for an international transfer in foreign currency.

Santander routing numbers for international transfers

ABA routing numbers only apply for wire transfers within the United States. If you plan to wire money outside the U.S., you’ll need to know your SWIFT code. SWIFT codes are the international version of ABA routing numbers.

There is only one SWIFT code for most banks. It is made up of the first four letters of the bank code, a two letter country code, and a two digit location code. In the case of Santander Bank, North America, the SWIFT code is SVRNUS33.

In some cases, you’ll need an additional three digits for your SWIFT code. These digits are a branch code, which identifies the branch that holds your bank account. To find out your SWIFT branch code, look at your print or online bank statements.
